Trap questions are the ones that sound really simple, but then you start to answer them and realise they’re actually not simple at all. In fact, they’re designed to trip you up. They’re designed to make you look bad. They’re designed to make it feel as if you’re not capable of doing the job properly. But that’s not necessarily the case – it’s just how these types of questions are approached by the questionnaires: they want to see how you react under pressure, what your thought process is and whether or not you can think on your feet. So here are some examples of trap questions and tips on how to answer them:
What are trap questions?
Trap questions are questions that are designed to trap the respondent into giving a certain answer or admitting to a certain accusation. “Trap questions are used to detect or test someone’s honesty. Most often, dishonest people will give the most detailed accounts of the event, while a person telling the truth will reveal facts that only support one side of the story.” Trap questions are often used especially in behavioral-based interviews, in scholarship applications, statistics, health surveys and other areas like relationships, lovers or partners ask each other if they have doubts and trust issues. The aim of trap questions is that they are designed to provoke a fault. They are designed to do this because some people prefer to give long-winded answers rather than saying no straight away. A Trap Question is a question which has an obvious answer, but if you answer it, you end up committing yourself to some kind of position or action. It can be used to make people do something or not do something or to accept something or reject something. The trap questions are fun when used in the right way and at the right time. So be careful when you ask one or answer them. Trap questions are not only tricky but they can also be a great way to start a conversation. There are many trap questions that you can use to have a funny conversation with people and also to assess their personality.
How do you answer trap questions?
The key to answering a trap question is to recognize that it’s a trap in the first place. This means you can’t just go off your gut feeling because if you do, the trap is set and you’re stuck in it. Instead, you must take a step back and examine the question before you begin to answer it. The most common way to answer a trap question is by restating the question in such a way that makes it clear what the interviewer is getting at without actually answering it directly.” The trickiest trap questions are ones that you can’t answer without creating a problem. The classic example is, “Would you still do it, even after I asked you not to?” If you answer in the affirmative, then you’re admitting that you did something wrong. If you say no, then you’ve got to admit that you did something wrong. Either way, it’s a loss for you. A good way to avoid this kind of trap is to take the issue off the table by saying, “I wouldn’t do something like that.” Then change the subject.

Trap Questions in Interviews
Interviewing is stressful. You’re being assessed on every word that comes out of your mouth and you’re under constant scrutiny. That pressure can cause you to slip up and say something that you don’t mean. The hard truth is, interviewers are looking for ways to disqualify candidates. One of the most effective ways to do that is by asking tricky interview questions designed to throw candidates off their game. Some of those questions might seem inappropriate or even illegal, but they’re not. Employers are allowed to ask some pretty personal questions, like how much money you make now or what salary you want next, because it’s legal for them to pay different salaries for the same job based on an individual’s experience and skillset. The key is to avoid over-thinking and to not fall into the trap. This can happen if you draw the wrong conclusion from the question, or if you let personal biases get in the way of your answer. Here is a list of Trap Interview questions:
- Why did you leave your last job? This is a tricky question because most people don’t want to say anything negative about their former employer. This question is designed to see if you have any issues with authority, work well on a team, or if you’ll speak ill of an employer. The best way to answer this question is with something positive and general, such as “I was looking for a new challenge,” or “I left for an opportunity at a company that is more aligned with my long-term goals.”
- What are your weaknesses? The key with this question is to answer honestly and steer clear of “weaknesses” that are really strengths in disguise (e.g., “I work too hard”). Instead, try giving a real weakness that is relevant to the job at hand and then follow up by explaining how you’re working to overcome it.
- Do you have any questions for me? Every interviewer asks this question. And it is one of the most crucial ones too. You can know everything about the company, its products, services, growth etc. But if you don’t ask relevant questions then your interviewer may get the feeling that you are not interested in the job or that you are not a go-getter. So, before attending an interview, prepare at least 5-6 questions that you would like to ask your employer.
- What do you know about our company? A lot of candidates face difficulties with this question because there isn’t much information available on the internet about small companies. But this shouldn’t stop you from answering this question. You can always talk about the products and services of the company and how it makes money by selling those products and services.
- What salary do you expect? Even if they haven’t mentioned anything about salary in the job description, they will probably ask this question. And if you are right out of college then it is highly likely that they will try to pay you less than what is your worth (and what other similar companies are paying). So, make sure that you have done enough research and
- If you were an animal, which one would you want to be? This question gives employers a peek into how you see yourself and what you consider your best qualities to be. They’ll also get a sense of whether or not you can think on your feet, so choose your answer carefully.
- Why do you want this job? There are many answers to this question and most of them will overlap; however, what makes yours unique is how passionate and enthusiastic you are about wanting the job
- What other companies are you interviewing with? If they ask this question, they’re probably trying to determine how serious you are about getting the job.
- If I were to ask your friends to describe you, what would they say?
- Do you like working in teams or prefer working individually? Why?
- What makes you uncomfortable?
- Do you have any questions for me?
- Have you ever stolen anything from work or school?
- I see that on your resume that one of your hobbies is playing video games, but it doesn’t seem very professional to me…what do you think about that?
- Do you know how much we pay for this position? Why should we hire someone at this salary when we can get someone
- If you could start a company from scratch, what would it be?
- What are you looking for in terms of career development?
- Why do you want to work here?
- What motivates you to do good work?
- How do you handle criticism?
- What was the last book you read for fun?
